Checklist Before Getting a Jack Russell Puppy

Cute Jack Russell Puppy

A Jack Russell is a bundle of energy. If you are planning to welcome this furry companion into your family. Take a look at this handy checklist before getting a Jack puppy to help you acquire what your new pup needs.

1. Collar

  • Breakaway collar
The breakaway collar prevents your puppy from strangulation and collar-related accidents. It is designed to avoid a puppy from getting strangled by his collar. It has a break-away safety buckle that comes off if it gets strained.
  • Martingale collar
A martingale has an additional strap that makes the collar contract if your puppy tries to tug on the leash. Since it is adjustable, it prevents choking when your dog tries to escape. It is comfortably loose when properly fitted.

2. Dog Food

The Jack Russell dog breed is highly energetic. Be sure to provide him with a high-quality protein-rich diet. A Jack Russell puppy needs around 800 to 900 calories per day to support his natural development. It is recommended to feed him three times daily.

Provide some tasty treats for your puppy too, especially when you start to train him. Since Jack Russells tend to overeat, low-calorie treats must be given sparingly.

3. Lead

Because of this dog breed’s natural instincts, the Jack Russell Terrier loves to chase,  especially when he is still a puppy. Make sure that his lead is strong enough to withstand sudden vigorous movements when you are taking him outdoors. The following types of leads are suitable for your puppy:

  • Standard Dog Lead
It is usually made from the cotton web or nylon and can extend to  3-6 ft. long. You can also go for a 4-6 foot lead for walks around the neighbourhood. This allows your puppy more room to explore his surroundings.
  • Adjustable Dog Lead
This lead allows you to alter the length. It can be adjusted between 3-6 feet by removing or adding loops or additional clips. The adjustable dog lead is useful for both walking and dog training.
  • Leather Dog Lead
One of the greatest qualities of leather dog lead is its durability. It takes a lot of time for it to wear out compared to other types of materials. This comes in handy especially when puppies likely to gnaw on their leads when they are going through their teething phase. Leather leads usually range from 1 to 6 ft in length.

4. Hot water bottle

Providing your Jack puppy with a hot water bottle to keep him warm helps him feel more at ease especially during the first few nights of settling in his new home. The bottle simulates the reassuring warmth that puppies feel when they stay close to their mother and siblings. Thus, it will make him feel comfortable and relaxed. Wrap the water bottle in a cloth or place it under a blanket to create insulating warmth for your Jack Russell puppy. Make sure the hot water bottle is securely wrapped to prevent your puppy from getting burnt.

5. Crate

It is recommended to provide your puppy with a crate. This is a place where your Jack puppy can find comfort and rest. The suggested crate size for a fully grown Jack Russell is 24L x 18W x 19H inches. If you want your puppy to have a more spacious crate, you can buy one a size larger. It is not recommended to have anything smaller than the suggested size unless you are preparing to purchase a bigger crate when your pup is fully-grown.

6. Dog Bed

Jack Russells are prone to developing joint or hip problems as they grow older. Buying a suitable dog bed for him will help prevent these health issues from manifesting. A dog bed with a bumper is highly recommended. The bumper provides a space where your pooch can lay his head on. It helps in relieving pressure from his neck.

7. Toys

Dog toys help your pup to relieve his boredom. There are lots of dog toys available on the market, which can be confusing for a new puppy owner. A Kong toy is a good start, its made with safe materials and durable enough to go through your Jack puppy’s teething stage. A soft stuffed dog toy can provide your puppy with comfort. Just keep in mind to avoid buying small toys which are potential choking hazards. Some dog owners suggest avoiding getting squeaky toys as they might trigger your Jack puppy’s prey instinct which you might want to train them out of.

8. Puppy Training Pads

Sooner or later, your new Jack Russell puppy will undergo house training. While it’s ideal for you to bring him outside every time he needs to release himself, sometimes it can be a hassle especially for apartment dwellers and elderly owners. This is when the training pads come in handy. If your puppy is still unvaccinated, it is best to teach him using the training pads until he is fully protected.
