Indoor Cat Care Guide

indoor cat care guide

Cats have the tendency to get bored easily when there’s no activity at home. They can become restless and have the urge to run away from home. The key to keeping your indoor cats happy and content is to provide them with mental and physical stimulation.

Keeping your cat happy indoors

  • Provide what your cat needs
a kitten in a litter boxFood, water, litter tray, and scratching post are the basic equipment for your cat to stay indoors. Litter trays are best placed away from any busy area. Cats love their privacy and would appreciate not getting disturbed when they are on their toilet breaks. Do keep in mind that when providing food for the cat, make sure to give the right amount to keep her energised until the next meal. If you put too much food on her plate to save yourself from giving her another serving for dinner, some cats might eat more than they should, this could lead to obesity. Additionally, keeping her water fresh is very important. Scratching is a natural cat behaviour; to save your furniture from potential damage, give your cat a scratching post or a scratching board.
  • Playtime

Your cat’s health and happiness lie in your hands. Bonding with your cat would make her feel more comfortable and secure at home. Plus, she will return the favour and become more affectionate towards you. Cats love to play. Training and exercise will help your cat become mentally and physically stimulated. It is also a good source of entertainment for her. Provide your cat with cat toys to keep her entertained when you are away.
  • Other healthcare needs

It will help your cat become more docile and not present territory behaviour. Hence, your cat would not be prone to catfights, diseases, and especially road accidents. Keep your cat healthy by getting them proper vaccination. Moreover, give your cat a view of the outside. ‘People watching’ is a common cat habit. Providing them with the opportunity to watch the outside world would surely keep her entertained.
  • Microchip your cat
Cats are natural escape artists. It’s best that you’d be able to track your cat if ever she wonders out. Being separated from your cat, especially your indoor cat which has lesser experience of the outside world, is one of the most difficult things to go through for a cat owner.

The life expectancy of an indoor cat

With proper care and exercise, an indoor cat can live for 18 years. An indoor cat has a longer life expectancy than an outdoor cat due to the fact that the latter is exposed to more risks. Getting hit by a car is the usual cause of death for outdoor cats.
