Although the sprocker spaniel is not recognised as an official breed by the Kennel Club (KC), many dog owners have already opened their homes to this breed. ‘Is the sprocker spaniel a good family pet?’ Know the answer through this article.

A Family-Loving Pooch

The sprocker spaniel breed is known to be an excellent gun dog breed. But more than that, it is also famous for being affectionate and devoted to its families. It has a relaxed and friendly disposition, which makes it a great family pet. The sprocker has inherited these traits from its parent breeds, which are the English springer spaniel and the American cocker spaniel.

A Great Hit with Children

The sprocker spaniel’s gentle and fun-loving personality allows it to keep up with children’s gags and roughhousing. However, it is still best to supervise playtime. This is to make sure that their games do not get too harsh.

Friendly to Other Furry Friends

The sprocker generally gets along with other dogs. This dog breed loves the companionship of cats too. Proper socialisation at a young age is the key to boost the sprocker’s affinity for its fellow furry friends. Although the sprocker spaniel is a sweet-natured dog, it still needs to be supervised when interacting with other smaller animals. Since it is both a working dog and a gun dog it might not be able to resist its prey drive, which must be prevented from happening.

A Social Butterfly

Its friendly nature enables it to easily get on with anyone. This breed is a social butterfly that thrives on human interaction. At times, it might even be prone to committing funny mischief to get people’s attention.

A sprocker spaniel’s amiability has its downside too. This trait makes it a poor guard dog. If a stranger does approach your property, this pooch will bark to warn you of the unknown presence. However, it might not defend your territory.

A Brainy Dog

The sprocker spaniel is an intelligent pooch with a high level of energy, which makes it easy to train. This pooch is very talented when it comes to canine sports. The sprocker can be trained for strenuous activities, such as flyball and dog agility. Although it cannot participate in events that are organised by KC, this energetic and brainy dog breed is encouraged to participate in other similar activities outside the KC’s scope.

Since the sprocker tends to be very active, it is difficult for it to live in an apartment. It is more suited in a home that has a spacious garden or in a rural area where it can run around to expend its boundless energy.

Less Barking

Getting a sprocker will not disturb the quiet days in your home. In general, this pooch barks less compared to many other dog breeds. Since it is primarily bred to flush out and retrieve game, the sprocker needs to keep silent whilst doing so to avoid scaring the prey away.
